This morning I wandered the grounds of Grande Albergo Mezzatorre. The main tower, now the hotel’s elegant library, was built in the 15th century by the Viceroy Don Parafon de Ribera to defend Isola d’ Ischia from the invasions of the Saracens of Northern Africa. I leafed through some of the newspapers on a polished mahagony table, then gazed out the window at a cruise ship resting on the Mediterranean’s horizon. It’s distant, but beautiful. Like my Vittoria, beyond immediate reach. The inscription on the coat of arms on the tower’s façade gives me encouragement. Like the Viceroy, I too must believe I will be victorious over powerful forces.
