Few Gulls, Little Tide

Relatively few gulls populate the Mediterannean. When I see them they usually are in groups of six to twelve. Also, the tide of this sea is hardly noticable, due to the narrow connection with the Atlantic at the strait. In the Penelope episode of Joyce’s Ulysses, Molly remembers sex with a British officer, in the old town of Gibraltar, while leaning against a Moorish wall. Forio’s Chapel of Soccorso has a distinct Moorish style. In America, before I decided to live here, Vittoria showed me a picture of that lovely building. I told her one day we’d be married there. She said yes.

“…he said I was a flower of the mountain…and how he kissed me under the Moorish wall and I thought well as well him as another…”
