It Began In The Second Millennium BCE

Between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers Mesopotamian engineers in the second millennium BCE invented the arch, a structure that spans a space while supporting weight. Later ancient Romans perfected the technique. Now arches are everywhere.

Private, Elusive, Enigmatic Vittoria

My six weeks as Vittoria’s houseguest in the late summer of 1999 was among the great experiences of my life. Her late husband’s enormous seaside mansion was at our exclusive disposal, and the servants were discreet and attentive. No better definition of bliss can ever be summoned.
