This morning Peppe came to my house to install a new DVD player into my computer. He asked me for a disc. I gave him “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” which I'd just gotten in the post from Amazon.co.uk. He smiled. “I’m in that movie,” he said.

We spent a pleasant half hour grabbing screen shots. Director Anthony Minghella filmed the scene here on the island, over at Ischia Ponte, near Castello Aragonese. All those people were not actors, but rather ordinary Ischians like himself, who understood perfectly how to express grief when a young, unmarried pregnant woman is fished out of the sea.

haha! That's a great story.

I actually remember watching that movie for the first time thinking, where is that Island in Italy? ....I want to go there someday. Now I know. ;)

The reality of this part of the world is as beautiful as the idealized version presented in movies like "The Talented Mr. Ripley," and my all time favorite (filmed on the nearby island of Procida), "Il Postino."

I have GOT to see both of those again very soon.

Thanks for a wonderful story. :)

i so truly dislike that movie...

Try "Il Postino," which was filmed on the nearby island of Procida.

I never saw that film, but these three images were amazing!

Thanks!

It's a tribute to Anthony Minghella that he managed to elicit and capture such an authentic display of emotions, even from untrained actors. Peppe said that Minghella--with crowds of extras craning their necks behind him-- carefully studied the videotapes of the filming, to make sure that he was getting exactly what he wanted.

I thought the movie to be interesting, though it's been a long while since I've seen it.

It's one of my favorites, and it stands up on second and third viewings. Extremely well done, in my opinion!

Re: talented mr. ripley

I looked, but didn't see you. I'll go back and slow the whole thing down. Maybe you went by too quickly! Describe to me again exactly what you were doing, and where you stood. Maybe that will help. If I spot you, then I'll capture the image and put it in a new entry.

By the way, Happy Thanksgiving! If you come here for the holiday, I'll buy you dinner at La Tinaia! Give me a ring.
