Provoked Nostalgia

In the mailbox this morning was a letter from Leila Hadley Luce, which contained some nostalgia-provoking clips from The March 13 New York Times. Back in the 70s Leila generously arranged for me to interview Miles Davis at his home on Manhattan’s Riverside Drive and then later at the Jazz Workshop in Boston. My subsequent profile of the great musician—"THE MILES DAVIS: A Semi-affectionate Reminiscence"—was the very beginning of my editing, magazine writing, and photojournalism career.

did you give half your fee to davis? it sounds like he was a cranky guy.

When the article was published I sent him a copy and in his reply he didn't repeat his earlier demand, so I assumed he'd changed his mind.

A mutual firend, simonette, thought I would find you interesting for obvious and various reasons. If you wouldn't mind, I don't mind I'll friend you, and I'd appreciate your reciprocating. I find I'm entralled by your work and art. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Welcome aboard, and thanks for your interest. I spent some time in Kentucky...in Lexington, where I was a reporter for the Herald. That was a LONG time ago!
