Tall stands of cane arch over the path, forming a living tunnel. Their dark green leaves resemble corn, only narrower. Further on, the walkway winds up the slope and through the vineyards. It’s cool in the dappled shade. A breeze catches the cane and the sound is precisely like that of gently falling rain. The walls on both sides are constructed of six-to twelve-inch wide lumps of pale green volcanic tuffa, roughly porous like sponges.
