Marvelous!

Last night I was lucky to stumble across “Flash Mob: The Opera” on BBC which occurred November 2004 at London’s Paddington Station. This was an update of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, Boy Meets Girl, Boy Loses Girl, Boy Gets Girl Back. A recently engaged couple, Mike (sung by tenor Nicholas Ransley) and Sally (soprano Rachel Nicholls), are driven apart because Mike just can’t get enough football, i.e., soccer. The train station’s milling crowd, many of whom have cellphones stuck to their ears, is the backdrop to the action as Sally tries to decide whether to run away with a handsome stranger (baritone Rodney Clarke) or to stick with Mike.

The performance was videotaped “live” as it happened, with music provided by the BBC Orchestra. It was bloody fucking marvelous. I was utterly captivated. More details are here and
here.

A great way to start the new year!
