My step-father, Walter “Bully” Orzechowski, refused to put my mother in a nursing home when she became afflicted with dementia. Instead he personally took care of her—that is he fed her, bathed her, washed her clothing, and lovingly nurtured her until she finally died. Not long after that, he too died.

C-Span’s Congressional Glossary says "Bully" stems from President Theodore Roosevelt's reference to the White House as a "bully pulpit," meaning a terrific platform from which to persuasively advocate an agenda. Roosevelt often used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful.
