"I think the same is the case with Rudy [Giuliani]. Yes, Podhoretz and Pipes and Rubin and the rest of them are nuts. But it's no accident he's gravitating toward them and vice versa. He has a deeply authoritarian personality. And his approach to governing is heavy on bullying and what in domestic affairs amount to appeals to force. Soften the words a bit and I think even his fans would agree to that description as the root of his success. " --Josh Marshall, TPM

April 16, 2005. I'm at my usual table at De La Concha, a cigar store and smoking lounge, on Sixth Avenue near 57th Street, New York City. Rudy, the ex-mayor, comes in, goes to the counter to order some smokes. I get out my Nikon and ask him if it's okay if I take his picture. He nods, and poses with a smile. I get off three shots.

"Okay, that's enough," Rudy says. His smile has vanished, he is serious. I lower the camera, and he departs.

Five minutes later the counter clerk tells me that Rudy's bodyguard--a stocky, tough-looking woman--was about to take me down when I approached the ex-mayor. But the clerk stopped her. "Hey, this guy John is okay," he said. "He's a regular here."

There's the grim, eagle-eyed bodyguard, blurred, to Rudy's right.

I hope you don't mind if I keep you on my friends list to read your public posts, I really enjoy your journal. If you would rather I did not, I will respect your wishes, please just let me know.

Your photography is amazing and your thoughts, politics very interesting.

My journal is a bit of a mess right now as I am making a huge transition from London to Boston, so a bit preoccupied and not my usual self, sorry for the mostly whiney, or dry, uninteresting content.

Be well. *soft friendly smile*

In my book anyone who thinks I'm interesting has just GOTTA be all right, so I don't mind being on your friends list, and what's more I have added you to mine.

Moving from one country to another, I know from direct personal experience, is full of stress on the level of death and divorce. But you've heard that "the fleetest beast to carry you to perfection is suffering." By that measure, well....

Thanks for adding me back. I usually journal daily, but as I said, with the moving to another country thing, I have been swept off my feet busy, and unfortunatly a bit one dimensional in my journal as of late. Another few weeks and I will have time to get back to my old, or should I say, new self.

I moved to London 10 years ago, it wasn't have as stressful as this move to the USA currently is. Thanks to Bush and all the paranoia over terrorism, everything is just obnoxious beyond belief. I believe you mentioned you were heading back there as well, soon? Good luck with that.

I look forward to reading more and getting to know you.
