But What Does She Mean By That?

Full understanding of another is nearly impossible, and the task becomes even more of a fool’s errand when that “other” happens to be a woman. I grew up in the sexism of the late 50s in the backwaters of the American midwest, and I suppose there’s a lingering trace of it in my psyche. It’s most evident when I say that a man can never understand a woman simply because she does not, and can not, understand herself. Now, a good way for a male writer to get past that difficulty is to avoid analysis altogether, and merely describe what a woman says and does. One always should let the reader decide what meaning can be deduced from behavior. Soon enough, though, it will become clear that meaninglessness itself is the central underlying truth of the universe.
