Among literally thousands and thousands of other Barack Obama Campaign volunteers, I received this email last night:

John --

I'm about to head to Grant Park to talk to everyone gathered there, but I wanted to write to you first.

We just made history.

And I don't want you to forget how we did it.

You made history every single day during this campaign -- every day you knocked on doors, made a donation, or talked to your family, friends, and neighbors about why you believe it's time for change.

I want to thank all of you who gave your time, talent, and passion to this campaign.

We have a lot of work to do to get our country back on track, and I'll be in touch soon about what comes next.

But I want to be very clear about one thing...

All of this happened because of you.

Thank you,

I am only one, but I am still one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.

This makes me want to leap into his arms and give him a big sloppy kiss. His spirit, his true class, have been missing from American discourse for so long. I'm inspired even as I sit here in quiet awe.

I started out campaigning largely because I just couldn't bear the idea of still another neocon Republican fascist as president. But I ended up doing it because Barack is precisely the RIGHT person for the job. I, too, am in awe of that man.

Thank gods our votes worked this time

I got the same mail from him. I cried. And posted about it, too!

I still recall with fondness my cellphone buzzing at 0300 one morning with a text message from Obama that said he'd picked Joe Biden as his vice president! He had me then, big time. Yes, it was a mass mailing kind of thing, as was the email, but nevertheless a class move.

agreed. I hadn't known anything about Biden when he was chosen -- it's only been for this campaign that I've had any sort of interest in politics.
