This short video’s inspiration came from digging up material for a section of WITNESS, my memoir in progress, that deals with my youthful days in the military.
Col. Bill Cridland and Maj. John Gibson were two officers I worked with in Strategic Air Command Intelligence 50 years ago. They’d both been 8th Air Force navigators in WWII and had each survived some 30 bombing missions through heavy anti-aircraft fire over Berlin, Munich and numerous other cities in Germany. I never knew that part of their history until now.
Both are dead.
I found another officer, Col. Lockerman, now 83 and living in North Carolina. I left a message on his answering machine asking him if he’d be willing to share his recollections of our days at the 4128th Strategic Wing.
He never got back to me.
