Wandering Star

Moon photo shamelessly lifted from Google Images

At four-forty-five yesterday morning in the darkness I went outside on the stoop and looked up. I caught sight of a medium-to-large bright star that was moving slowly along, in a direction from directly above to the eastern horizon, and I thought it was a satellite. But then after a few moments it seemed to slow down somewhat, which a satellite just doesn’t ever do, and then it seemed to wobble a bit, departing the straight course it was following.

I blinked several times, thinking maybe I was having an eye problem, but I could clearly see the object was varying its speed, and it was moving off and on its previous straight line of flight. It was a completely clear star-filled sky but I thought I could see faint traces surrounding the object, kind of cloud-like, but I couldn't quite make it out. Then the thing disappeared behind a tree line.

I went out again this morning and scanned the overhead constellations. Everything appeared normal. All stars in place, with absolutely no discernable movement.
