"Various criticisms have been directed against Mr Joyce's use of the silent monologue in Ulysses. It was, I think, Mr Wyndham Lewis who suggested that, as thoughts are not always verbal and we can think without words, the technique of the silent monologue is misleading. Against this, however, there is the equally tenable hypothesis that 'without language there can be no thought,' and the obvious fact that, even if we do not think, we certainly must write in words."
