Fair Question
Q: MSNBC reports that friends were concerned that Sophia Loren was “a tad disoriented” during a recent TV appearance. You started this whole adoption story. What’s your reaction to the star’s distress?

A: I can imagine the deep conflict Sophia is experiencing now, and at the same time I’m fully aware of Maria’s anguish. My heart goes out to both of them.

I’ve said all along this is sad and painful for all concerned. Like Maria, I was abandoned at birth by my mother. I met her later in life, however, and learned that she was not the evil person my father made her out to be. I also learned there are always two sides to any issue.

I hope and pray this story has a happy ending. I’ll continue to do whatever I can to help.

This is all so interesting. Did you have any idea it would create this kind of stir when you got into talking about it?

When I started composing fiction long ago I came across an aphorism that said very often a writer thinks he chooses his subject, but in fact it's the other way around. At the beginning I thought this Maria story would be a rather conventional love triangle. I had absolutely NO hint of what what was to come. And each day I'm utterly astonished at what appears at the turn of the page.
